Eating Disorder Awareness and Education:

Are you concerned that a loved one may be developing an eating disorder?

Become informed and empowered to help.

I offer a single 90 – 120 minute session for parents or others who may be wondering if a family member’s behaviors around food or eating might indicate the presence of an eating disorder or an increased risk of developing an eating disorder. You will learn what an eating disorder is, what is involved in treatment, and the role of family members in the healing process. The presence of any of the symptoms listed below may increase the risk for the development of an eating disorder and early intervention can lead to prevention:

  • Child or adolescent weight loss
  • Unusually rapid weight gain
  • Eating unusually restricted in quantity and/or types of food
  • Deteriorating health from poor nutrition
  • Eating in isolation or in secret
  • Binge eating
  • Purging such as vomiting, taking laxatives, or enemas
  • Excessive or compulsive exercise
  • Obsession with thinness
  • Inordinate fear of weight gain
  • Intense dislike of the body
  • Withholding medications for patients with diabetes

It may seem overwhelming to know what steps to take to find the most appropriate help for your loved one if you have witnessed any of these distressing symptoms. You may wonder whether an active prevention program or actual treatment for an established eating disorder is needed. Many families could benefit greatly from a conversation with a knowledgeable and experienced professional to provide the guidance they need to navigate through the initial steps of diagnosis and beginning treatment. If a diagnosable eating disorder is present, the earlier treatment is initiated, the greater the likelihood of achieving a full recovery. I will be happy to discuss various treatment options including residential programs in your local area.
